How Do You See Yourself?

This past year I have seen people come into my dojo seeking for Jujitsu lessons for self-defense.  They came stayed for one or two classes and then leave, never to be seen again.  Why is that?  Is it because we actually train people, put some physical effort into our training?  We find it self satisfying to keep our Jujitsu training real or as real as one can get without hurting each other.  When I teach self-defense, I like to have my attacker to attack me as hard and as real as they can.  Why? I need to see if what I teach really does work and if it does not then I need to adjust my technique or throw it out.   We call this pressure testing.  When some one pressure tests a technique it to see if adjustments need to be made for them.  This is the only way to see what works and what does not work.

Some dojos find this method insulating, to their art.   I encourage this method as a way to find self-perfection and expression in an art.  So are you willing to settle for a less effective method or will you keep to your high standards of training and test every thing to see what works for you?  I enjoy pushing my body to limits to see what I can handle and what I can not handle.  My philosophy: " At some point, you are going have to defend yourself and you are going have to show that you stand for something at some point."--Cory Mathews   This statement is what I have adopted in my everyday life and in my training as well.

Get out there and stand for something, inspire others, and don't take life for granted.

Training Programs

Over the Last 10 years, I have been learning more and more about diets and training through podcasts, youtube videos (I listen to specific people and not just your random Joe Blow off the street) and through experimentation using myself as a human guinea pig.  Why? Because I want to find what works for me to help improve my quality of life and help to hone my JiuJitsu abilities.  I LOVE JiuJitsu- Japanese and Brazilian.  Each art has its own place in the real world but combine them and that real world training becomes even a larger playground.  Add in an excellent striking art (like Muay Thai or real karate) and man you will become unstoppable!  Add to that a perfect diet (one that works for you) and strength training (one that will fit your body) and you can defend or protect yourself from almost anything.

I have provided three different links to training programs that are AWESOME.  I have purchased programs from all three and love them.  I rotate them monthly and I can't brag enough about the benefits of each one.  My physical appearance have changed- I am more toned, my bodyfat has decreased, my strength has increased and when I roll or practice street defense I can out last most of my training partners.  So click on one of the above links and check them out.  He is a sample form one of the programs:

This one comes form the Strength Gym:

Day 1:
100 Squats
4 rounds of max rep push-ups
40 walking lunges each leg
4 rounds of max rep recline rows
30 knee raises (either hanging or dip bar)
3 rounds of max rep or time of grip work

The training sessions can be done anywhere and at any time.  They require very little or almost no equipment.  The only thing that is required to start is your will and motivation to get started and keep that motivation going.  Give them a try and see what you think.  Strength Gym

What is Hybrid JiuJitsu?

What is Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu? First off, let me clarify some ideas and myths about Jiu-Jitsu.  The main and only objective behind Jiu-Jitsu is self-protection (combat).  Jiu-Jitsu was developed for warfare by soldiers (Samurai) who, in the event of the losing of their weapons, could defend themselves using only their hands.  The techniques should be simple and effective, meaning it should save your life.

People want to complicate the art of Jiu-Jitsu to make it look pretty and flashy.  When this happens it is not Jiu-Jitsu, it's simply a sport like judo, boxing, football, or even basketball.  Jiu-Jitsu was not meant for sport.  Sport Jiu-Jitsu came about as a way to practice techniques in a safe environment without the threat of serious injuries and fatalities but over time gyms and academies egos got in the way and movements/techniques were developed for the soft padded surface.  Hence sport.  So, is this the "martial art" the creators of Jiu-Jitsu foreseen their art's path to be taken?  I DO NOT THINK SO.

Alright; enough of that, back to reality and the original question.

What is Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu or what kind of Jiu-Jitsu is practiced at Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu? Well, at Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu we practice Combat Jiu-Jitsu as a way of life.  It is not all about practicing techniques.  We also practice a healthy lifestyle to survive life in a calm and collected manner.  Our Jiu-Jitsu is a blend of Japanese rooted Jiu-Jitsu with an old school American flare (Shin Shin Jiu-Jitsu), Muay Thai, American Modern Karate (Zen Ki Do), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and a simple basic diet that will help you to train well into your older years.

However, our BJJ is more focused on self-protection, unlike than the popular sport oriented BJJ.  Yes, we can and have competed at grappling tournaments and have done very well but we use the "sportive" side to help us enhance our Combative mindset- to never give up.

We cover all aspects of self-protection from the verbal start, to the five ranges of physical space and to ending the situation systematically and appropriately.  The focus of our training is to give you the tools to survive an attack against you or to help you protect your loved ones from a person who intends to inflict harm.  So what kind of Jiu-Jitsu do we teach at Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu? Easy, we teach the kind of Jiu-Jitsu that will save your life or the life of a loved one.

Time for a new Beginning

For the past year, I have been training for obstacle races, improving my Jjiu-Jitsu and life in general.  I have been cleaning up my eating habits and just trying to get the most out of what I eat.  As a result my strength has increased, I'm more muscular, I feel better as a whole and my joints don't hurt as bad.  What am I doing you ask?  All bodyweight training.  I have been doing my push-ups, burpees, sit-ups, squats, pull-ups and much more and all under 1 Hour of intense training.  In the above links you will find a ton of bodyweight training programs that will help you to achieve your goals of becoming the best YOU.  Check them out and see what fits your needs.

It's summer time and you know what that means? Swimsuit season is here.  Why not get in the best shape of your life.  This month (June) my dojo has issued a challenge of doing 100 tricep dips (any style of your choosing) everyday for 30 days, in addition to your regular training sessions.  I'm also doing 100 burpees at least 5 days a week also and let me tell you the dips and burpees are kicking my butt.  However, I feel great, stronger, leaner, and overall I haven't been sick in a long time.  So give them a try: 100 tricep dips of your choice.  Complete them and feel great.

Training for Life, Challenges and Myself

I run in obstacle races (mud runs), 5ks and love it.  My time has always been good and I turn heads as I run by the crowd and other runners.  What separates me from the rest of the runners? I don't run. That's right I don't train to run at all.  How do I run so fast? I lift heavy and perform my calisthenics with speed and form. I don't give up and obtain my goal for that training session no matter what.  Check out the upper tabs for a complete unique way of training.
